Ventnor is built on terraces cut into the Undercliff beneath St Boniface Down, and it is — by some distance — the most physically demanding town on the Island to clear. Zigzag roads, stepped footpaths instead of driveways, and Victorian villas whose front doors sit a flight or two above (or below) where a van can legally stop.
That's not a complaint; it's our pitch. We quote after seeing the access, we bring enough crew to carry rather than drag, and the price we give is the price you pay — no "sorry, the stairs" surcharges invented on the day.
Donations go to the Mountbatten shop at 16 Pier Street, the RSPCA shop at 33–35 High Street or Diabetes Research at 18 High Street, all in the town centre. We're about 38 minutes from Newport.

Local knowledge
Ventnor had 5,567 residents at the 2021 census, eleven miles south-south-east of Newport, and it is the most demanding place we work in — for one reason.
The town is built on the Undercliff, the largest urban landslide complex in north-west Europe, on steep slopes running down to the sea, with the commercial centre 45 metres above sea level and St Boniface Down at 241 metres directly north. A van very often cannot stop level with the door, and carrying up or down those slopes changes the crew size far more than the load does. A note about the gradient and where a vehicle can legally stop is the single most useful thing you can tell us.
The building stock is largely Victorian, from the boom after 1830 when the physician James Clark identified the climate as ideal for chest complaints and the fishing hamlet became a fashionable resort. Tall narrow terraces on steep streets mean tight staircases and doorways built well before modern furniture.
The roads in — Leeson Road, Ocean View Road and Whitwell Road — were built in the late nineteenth century and are steep and narrow. The railway closed in stages in 1952 and 1966, so everything comes by road.
At 12.1 miles and roughly 38 minutes from our base, the onward route is worked out before the van is loaded rather than after. Anything still usable is kept separate as we go, and only what is genuinely finished with goes to a household recycling centre.
Charity and reuse shops nearby
We cannot promise any particular shop will accept a given item — that is always their call on the day — but sorting for reuse first is how we keep as much as possible out of the skip.
