Mattress disposal on the Isle of Wight, down the stairs and gone

An old mattress is heavy, floppy and won't fit in most cars. We carry it down from the bedroom, take the bed frame too if you like, and send it for recycling where possible.

Second-floor flats and tight Victorian staircases included.

  • Toppers and bedding

Duvets, pillows and toppers that charity shops won't take.

Your options

Where an old mattress can go

Charity shops won't take used mattresses; Mountbatten, for one, doesn't accept them. These are the realistic routes.

What we can't take

  • Mattresses with clinical waste or sharps
  • Hospital beds still on loan

Loaned hospital beds go back to the supplier. Sofa beds count as upholstered seating and must be incinerated: see our sofa disposal guide.

FAQ

Mattress disposal questions

Short answers. If yours is not here, call or send it with your quote.

Will a charity shop take my old mattress?

Almost certainly not. Charities such as Mountbatten don't accept used mattresses, pillows or quilts, and most furniture reuse schemes are the same.

Why does it cost anything to get rid of a mattress?

Licensed facilities charge per mattress. The council's commercial centre at Lynnbottom lists £15 for a single, £20 for a double and £25 for a king or queen (October 2026), before collection and labour.

Does a mattress count as POPs waste like a sofa?

No. Government guidance on POPs in upholstered seating excludes mattresses and beds. A sofa bed is treated as seating, though.

Can you take the bed frame as well?

Yes. We take apart wooden and metal frames, divan bases and headboards, and take them with the mattress.

Is it worth it for just one mattress?

If you can get it to the tip yourself, that's cheaper. If it's upstairs, or no vehicle you have will take it, a collection saves a difficult job.

How do I know it won't be dumped?

We're a licensed waste carrier you can check on the Environment Agency register. Be wary of anyone charging less than disposal costs: if your mattress is fly-tipped, the council can fine you up to £600.
