Why old windows end up stuck in the garden
The council collection won't take them, and the tip charges for DIY waste over a small allowance.

What we can't take
- Frames still fitted in the wall
- Asbestos panels from under windows
- Loose broken glass, unwrapped
Broken glass is fine boxed or wrapped in taped cardboard. A flat, board-like panel from under an old window may be asbestos insulating board: keep it aside and get it tested. Stripping out fixed frames is light demolition.

FAQ
Window and door removal questions
Short answers. If yours is not here, call or send it with your quote.
Will the council collect old windows and doors?
No. The council's bulky waste service lists doors and windows, and mirrors and glass, among items it won't collect. You can take them to a tip yourself, but DIY waste over the free allowance has been charged since 14 September 2026.
Do you take windows out of the wall?
No. We collect them once they're out. Taking out a fitted window leaves an opening that needs the new one fitted the same day, which is the installer's job. Internal doors we can take off their hinges by arrangement.
Can you take double-glazed units with the glass in?
Yes. We carry and load them upright and padded. If a unit is already cracked or broken, we wrap it before moving it.
My window fitter left the old frames. Is that normal?
Some fitters include disposal and some don't, so check your quote. If it wasn't included, we collect the frames and other refit waste in one visit.
What happens to old uPVC windows?
We keep uPVC apart from glass, timber and metal so it can go for recycling where a facility takes it. Mixed in with general waste, it would all go as general waste.
How should I stack them before you arrive?
Upright against a wall, on something soft, glass facing glass. Keep children and pets away from the pile.
